Each commission is unique. The information below is a general idea of how I handle a commission request. Rough price ranges and payment options are at the bottom of this narrative.
When distance, schedule and budget allow, we can arrange to get together so I can meet the subject of the portrait and take as many reference photos as possible. This gives me a better sense of the personality of the subject. But if seeing the subject is not possible, I will ask you to send me a variety of photographs (larger more detailed photos, whether paper photos or jpegs/tiff/raw, are always more helpful than smaller ones). More reference is always preferred but if the subject of the portrait has passed on, I will do my best to work with whatever reference you have.
Prices: The price ranges below are based on my experience having done many commission portraits on a wide variety of subjects. When we have our initial call, email exchange or meeting, we can talk about the many factors that can drive the final price – too many to list here.
Dogs: Minimum price is $250.00 for a simple 7”x7” border/palm-sized portrait (palm-sized is generally maxed at 4” high or wide). Prices for larger portraits have been as much as $1500 but average around $500.00.
People/Horses: Minimum price is $750.00 for a 10”10” portrait where the actual face/head is roughly open-hand size and the price can go as high as about $2000.00.
Wildlife such as Whitetail, Elk, Moose and other horned or antlered animals: Minimum price is $800.00 for a 10”x10” portrait and there is no upper limit because of the many variables that I have encountered when creating portraits in this category, most often from hunters.

I ask for a 50% deposit before starting the commission and the remaining 50% before shipping on the day I hand deliver it. Prices do not include matting/framing. If you want me to arrange framing with my local framer, I can do that for an additional fee or you can speak with them directly. Michelle and her staff are great and can be reached at https:/hopeandfeathersframing.com.
